Do You Have a Dream?

I am blessed with a positive disposition, so dreaming comes easy to me. I began dreaming when I was little. I started dreaming about being a ballerina and then about being a famous movie star. I really wanted to be an actress. I loved thinking about it and did a lot of practicing. I even acted in a few community plays. It was fun and gave me something to think about.

Now, I know what you are thinking: Jennie, you aren’t a famous movie star or even an actress! So why are you telling us this story? I am telling you about my childhood dreams because I want you to know dreaming is a great thing! It is a great thing even when you don’t achieve the dream. The simple act of dreaming is fun and energizes you. I have worked with a lot of people who thought dreaming was for kids, not for “grown-ups.” Luckily, I was able to convince them to think differently. Hopefully, I will convince you, too!

So where do you start? I say start simple. First, think about something you have always wanted to do. Go for a visit to “Someday Isle.” You know, the place we often say we’ll go to. “Someday, I will ride a motor cycle.” “Someday, I will write a book.” “Someday, I will tell my boss to go jump in a lake.” “Someday, I will tell her ‘I love you.’” I don’t know what is on your “Someday Isle,” but I have found it is a great place to start your dreaming. All you have to do is visit your “Someday Isle” and decide what you always wanted to do but haven’t done yet.

Second, after you decide what you want to do, start thinking about all the steps to make it happen. I like to list them all out, big and small. Don’t worry about the order of the list or the time it will take. Just start listing what you think it might take to get it started and keep going.

Next, look at your list and put it in order from the first tiny step to grand finale step. It is easier than you think, if you just start. Start by putting them in the order that makes the most sense to you even if it isn’t perfect. I usually end up rearranging my list, but at least I get it on paper. Then take that minor step toward your dream, and you will be amazed by how good it feels.

So, what is stopping you? Go start dreaming!
